Tudor Is Reintroducing the ‘Ranger’
Rolex’s sister brand is bringing back the model in honor of the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition.
Tudor has introduced a new “Ranger” watch. The 39 mm automatic watch has a 70-hour power reserve and is available with three different stripes, all priced under $3,000 retail.
Geneva—Tudor is remaking the Ranger, a utility watch whose aesthetic can be traced back to timepieces from the 1960s.
The Ranger is an automatic watch with a 39 mm satin-brush steel case with Super-LumiNova hour markers and what the brand refers to as Ranger-style hands.
It is powered by the manufacturer caliber MT5402 movement, which is certified as a chronometer by COSC and has a 70-hour power reserve.
There are three bracelet options: an olive-green jacquard fabric strap with red and beige straps, a hybrid rubber and leather band, and a steel bracelet.
The fabric strap and rubber/leather band models both retail for CHF 2,600 ($2,657 at current exchange rates), while the bracelet version of the Ranger is CHF 2,900 ($2,963 at current exchange rates).

British scientists and sailors who were part of the British North Greenland Expedition in 1952 wore, and tested, Tudor Oyster Prince watches, pictured left. The new version of the brand’s Ranger watch has been released in homage to the 70th anniversary of the expedition.
Tudor said it is releasing the Ranger to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition.
Comprised mainly of British scientists and sailors, the expedition left London on July 8, 1952.
The expeditioners spent two years in Greenland studying ice sheets, conducting glaciological and seismic surveys at several sites.
During the trip, they wore Tudor’s Oyster Prince watch, the brand’s first timepiece that was both automatic and waterproof.
They were asked to report back on how the watch performed in extreme conditions, marking one of the first long-term tests of a Tudor watch in real-world conditions.
Though the members of the 1952 Greenland expedition did not wear Rangers, Tudor noted it has had the name registered since 1929 and started making watches with what it refers to as the Ranger aesthetic—large glow-in-the-dark numerals and unique hands—in the 1960s.
Tudor has made the model in several variations since, including with or without the date and with automatic or manual winding, and even introduced a second version, the Ranger II, in 1973.
The brand said this latest addition to the line “celebrates the adventurous spirit of these pioneers of arctic exploration, offering an affordable combination of state-of-the-art watchmaking technology and historical aesthetics.”
