Hasbro family jewels play well at auction
Jewelry from the estate of Rita Dee Hassenfeld was sold in Chicago last week, with all top 10 lots exceeding pre-sale high estimates.
Chicago--Each of the top 10 lots in the sale of Rita Dee Hassenfeld’s collection soared past pre-sale estimates at an auction held last week in Chicago, with a Harry Winston ring coming out on top after realizing more than $500,000.
Leslie Hindman Auctioneers auctioned the jewelry from the estate of Hassenfeld, a philanthropist and humanitarian who was married to the late Harold Irwin Hassenfeld. Hassenfeld once headed the company that became Hasbro Inc., which manufactures toys and games including Monopoly, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head and Play-Doh.
The sale of her jewelry totaled $3.5 million.
Hassenfeld, who died Jan. 3, owned signed pieces from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Suzanne Belperron, David Webb, Harry Winston and Seaman Schepps.
Topping the auction was a platinum and diamond ring by Harry Winston, which sold for $515,000. Another piece, an Art Deco lapel watch by Cartier, shattered expectations when it sold for $473,000, more than double its pre-sale high estimate of $150,000.
Also in the top 10 were multiple lots from Van Cleef & Arpels, including a diamond necklace, diamond collar and diamond ear clips.
A complete list of results can be found on the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers website.
