Rolex, Patek Philippe top Antiquorum sale
A Rolex Ref. 6263 “Paul Newman,” named after the actor-turned-racer, sold for $231,750 at Antiquorum, more than three times its pre-sale high estimate.
The steel wristwatch is an Oyster Cosmograph made in 1970 with a black bezel, round-button chronograph, registers, tachometer and stainless steel bracelet. Once owned by Newman, who began driving race cars later in life, it was the top lot of the auction.
“As confirmed by today’s results, rare timepieces offered from the property of its original owner continue to be highly sought after by savvy collectors across the globe,” said Antiquorum USA Watch Director Saori Omura.
Overall, Antiquorum’s sale of Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces, held Wednesday in New York, totaled $2.7 million, with bidders hailing from Taiwan, Singapore, China, the Czech Republic, Kuwait, Andorra and the United States.
A Patek Philippe Ref. 5102 “Celestial” also exceeded its pre-sale high estimate to sell for $207,750. Made in 2003, the 18-karat white gold watch features a nocturnal sky chart of the Northern Hemisphere, moon phases and moon orbit.
Rounding out the top three lots of the sale was another Patek Philippe, this one a Ref. 1463 in 18-karat yellow gold. Made in 1948, the watch has a round button chronograph, register and tachometer. It sold for $147,750.
