GSI opens its ninth laboratory
The lab is located in Gaborone, Botswana, where Gemological Science International CEO Mark Gershburg said there is a demand for labs and gemological education.

Gaborone, Botswana--Gemological Science International has opened a lab in the Botswana capital of Gaborone, the same city where De Beers now has its sorting and sales operations.
GSI announced the opening last week. It is the New York-based lab’s second new location to open recently; it opened a facility in Surat, India, in November.
The lab said it plans to establish educational programs, courses and seminars in Gaborone as well, in addition to providing diamond grading services.
“After decades of just mining rough diamonds, Botswana’s capital Gaborone now cuts, polishes and sells the diamonds, which creates a demand for gemological laboratories and education,” said GSI CEO Mark Gershburg. “GSI has become a global powerhouse with offices strategically positioned to serve major markets worldwide.”
GSI opened in New York City in 2005 as a full-service lab and has offices in India, Israel, Belgium and, now, Botswana.
