Breitling Releases New SuperOcean Collection

They’re based on a classic diving watch from the 1960s and 1970s.

Bright dials and sporting functionality, particularly for water sports, define the new Breitling SuperOcean collection.
New York—Breitling is reinventing a classic mid-century timepiece.

The new SuperOcean collection debuted this summer is a redux of the SuperOcean Slow Motion of the 1960s and 1970s.

The original was a diving watch, dubbed the “Slow Motion” because it was pared down to the most basic diving functionality, without even a seconds hand.

While the new SuperOcean collection is more versatile—with features like seconds hands—it retains the same sporty ethos.

There are four sizes in the collection: a 36mm, 42mm, 44mm, and 46mm model. Equipped with a choice of rubber strap or three-row metal bracelet, the folding clasps allow for 15mm adjustments to accommodate dive suits and rash guards.

Each SuperOcean timepiece is water-resistant to 300 meters or 1,000 feet. They have broad hands and index rendered in Super-LumiNova for underwater eligibility.

Several elements lend to the timepiece’s hardiness, like a scratchproof ceramic-inlayed bezel designed to prevent wearing and fading, and the automatic Breitling Caliber 17 movement with a 38-hour power reserve that has a two-year warranty. The entire timepiece is designed to be shock-, sand-, and saltwater-resistant.

For safety during activities like diving, the bezel is unidirectional on three of the sizes, while the 46mm edition has a patented lock.

True to the original Slow Motion, the minute hand is square.

Representing the SuperOcean collection is Breitling’s “Surfer Squad,” featuring surfers Kelly Slater, Stephanie Gilmore, and Sally Fitzgibbons.

The former, arguably the world’s most recognized surfer Slater, collaborated on a special-edition timepiece called the SuperOcean Automatic 42 Kelly Slater.

Limited to 1,000 editions, it features an orange dial and military green rubber strap, a color combination inspired by the colors Slater’s father often wore surfing.

Professional surfer Kelly Slater co-designed this limited-edition timepiece from the new SuperOcean collection.

“I’ve been co-creating watches with Breitling for the past few years but this one, in particular, is very personal,” the athlete remarked.

“It’s inspired by my late father, who had a watch with an orange face that he used to wear surfing for as long as I can remember. The green and orange together is a color scheme I used to like for the airbrushes on my boards growing up. That combination has always stuck with me.”

Breitling SuperOcean watches are available online now and retail between $4,600 and $6,700.
