Alrosa’s Latest Big Find: A 241-Carat Diamond
Uncovered at the Nyurbinskaya pipe, the rough diamond is one of the largest ever found in the Russian Federation.
Moscow--Alrosa announced Thursday its recovery of a 241.21-carat rough diamond from the Nyurbinskaya open-pit mine.
The crystal is translucent with a gray hue, according to Alrosa, and “4 Black Clivage/Makeable 2” color. It measures 38.64 x 27.34 x 25.46 mm.
There are traces of dissolution, including etching channels and caverns, on the surface, and it also contains large cracks and graphite and sulphide inclusions.
The Nyurbinsky open-pit mine began operations in 2001 and had reserves of 36.9 million carats as of Jan. 1, 2015.
It is part of the Nyurba Mining and Processing Division, which is one of Alrosa’s youngest and operates at the Nakyn ore field and develops Nyurbinsky and Botuobinsky open-pit mines and two same-name alluvial placers.
Last year, the division’s share in Alrosa’s total production totaled 20 percent.
The discovery of the 241-carat stone is the second big diamond find in recent months for the mining company.
In May, Alrosa unearthed a 207.29-carat diamond from the Zarnitsa pipe at the Udachny Mining and Processing Division, a mining operation located near the Arctic Circle.
