Video: Mila Kunis in July’s birthstone
To celebrate the launch of its Mozambican rubies, Gemfields released a short film featuring brand ambassador Mila Kunis wearing bespoke pieces of jewelry set with the gemstone.
London--Gemfields tapped brand ambassador and actress Mila Kunis to star in a short film meant to explore the “mystery and allure” of rubies.
Created to celebrate the colored gemstone miner’s foray into Mozambican rubies, the approximately 2-minute video was directed by art photographer Jeff Burton, who is a regular contributor to publications such as French Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New York Times and has collaborated with the likes of Tom Ford, Yves Saint Laurent, and Celine for advertising campaigns.
In the film, Burton combines the light refractions from the gemstones and shots from inside the rubies with the shimmer of the jewelry, with Kunis front and center wearing little but bespoke pieces of jewelry set with Mozambican rubies from five designers--Fabergé, Georg Jensen, Spinelli Kilcollin, Miiori and Gyan.
It was shot in the canyons above Malibu, Calif.

The ruby, which is the birthstone for July, is one of the most historically important colored gemstones, having accumulated a number of legends over the centuries, and can command the highest per-carat price of any colored stone, according to the Gemological Institute of America.
Gemfields’ Montepuez mine in Mozambique has yielded a couple large, important rubies since it began operations.
In December, Gemfields discovered a 40.23-carat ruby later dubbed the “Rhino” that led its auction that same month in Singapore.
Last month the miner uncovered a rare pair of matching rubies weighing 45 carats in total and of “exceptional clarity.” Veerasak Gems of Thailand purchased them for an undisclosed sum and named them “Eyes of the Dragon.”
