Gemfields finds rare pair of matching rubies
The colored gemstone miner unearthed a rare set of matching rubies weighing a total of 45 carats from its Montepuez mine in Mozambique.
The two rough stones--which have a vivid red color and are of exceptional clarity, according to Gemfields--will be one of the highlights of the company’s ruby auction slated for June 16 to 21 in Singapore.
Gemfields declined to give an estimate of the rubies’ value.
The find follows closely on the heels of the miner’s discovery of the “Rhino Ruby,” a 40.23-carat ruby unearthed in December that sold for an undisclosed sum at Gemfields’ ruby auction that same month.
At the time the Rhino Ruby was found, Ruben Bindra, a member of the American Gem Trade Association’s board of directors and president of B & B Fine Gems, told National Jeweler that while the yield from ruby rough depends on a number of factors, “conservatively one may assume yield of 30 percent to 40 percent,” meaning that these two recently found rough rubies also may yield cut and polished stones of considerable size.
The more important factor, he added, is how clean the stone is and whether or not it needs to be heated.
He also added that the “Rhino Ruby” find was significant because it meant that the Montepuez mine was yielding much-needed important rubies, a factor further backed by this new pair of stones.
