Peridot, known for its vivid green hues, has long been associated with light. Its bright green shades also seem to be perfectly suited for the colors of the summer, making it well positioned for being the birthstone for the month of August.
The gemstone also is long in history. Not only do early records indicate that the ancient Egyptians mined the green gem on an island now known as St. John’s Island, or Zabargad, in the Red Sea, but the stone also has been found in meteorites that have fallen to earth, though that type is extremely rare.
Peridot is thought to protect its owners from nighttime terrors, especially when set in gold. It’s also believed to help with healing, increase happiness and decrease negative emotions like stress, anger, and jealousy.
