My in-box is normally overloaded this time of year with photos of celebrities attending award shows, but given the continuing writers' strike and cancelled Golden Globes ceremony, it's been something of a red-carpet withdrawal for all.
Sunday night, however, brought reason to rejoice, as the normally understated Screen Actors Guild Awards went on as scheduled, with the stars glamming it up for the first, and perhaps only, major red-carpet event of the season.
Of all the looks, I think actress and presenter Kate Beckinsale's takes the cake. One, I think it takes some guts to wear yellow, and two, I think Beckinsale piled on Van Cleef & Arpels' private museum collection jewelry in a fresh way.
I tend to like jewelry styling at two extremes: almost ascetically streamlined or verging on the point of excess. Here, the diamond rings on both hands and the stacked double-wrist bracelets put the look into the second category, but there's an altogether Art Deco vibe drawing it all together. It's also clear someone's been listening to Vogue's edict about brooches.
But, if there's any more question as to Beckinsale's dressing abilities, here's a reason to give her extra props: According to People.com, while getting ready at home, Beckinsale's cat's tail caught fire on a candle, creating a bit of a disaster and nearly causing the actress to stay at home. Luckily, the kitty's fine, and Beckinsale pulled her look together just in time.
