Associate Editor Lenore Fedow shares her favorite jewels from this year’s Style Files, a curated selection of jewelry by Jewelers of America’s Amanda Gizzi.
With the holiday season in full swing, I’m in a celebratory mood, and what better way to celebrate than with jewelry.
As 2023, an eventful and tumultuous year, comes to a close, I’m also in a reflective mood.
The National Jeweler editors and I recently recapped the year in our “2023 Rewind” webinar, talking about the biggest news on our beats, our favorite stories, and more.
As we looked back on our favorites of 2023, I began thinking about my top jewels of the year.
This January will mark my fifth anniversary of being a National Jeweler editor, and even after all the jewels I’ve seen, designers still find new ways to wow me.
Their creativity and innovation have inspired me to find and appreciate beauty at every opportunity.
In her feature Style File, Jewelers of America’s Amanda Gizzi highlights jewelry under new themes each month, from birthstones to holidays, showcasing incredibly talented designers.
These are 20 of my favorites from 2023.
New Year: Style File kicked off on a high note with festive, sparkly jewels. This 18-karat white gold and diamond necklace by Picchiotti (price available upon request) would’ve been perfect for ringing in the new year.
January: Garnet jewels were highlighted in this Style File for the January babies. This Katherine Jetter Malaya garnet and diamond cocktail ring in 18-karat rose gold with rhodium plating ($18,000) was a showstopper.
February: My favorite piece from the “Purple and Playful” Style File was this 18-karat rose gold Assael ring, set with a purple amethyst and a natural colored Tahitian pearl ($14,800). Purple and pearls are a lovely combo.
Tucson: This Style File highlighted the five trending colors at the Tucson shows. These tourmaline, sapphire, citrine and diamond earrings ($30,550) by Graziela Gems showcase two of the color trends spotted—teal and orange. These are my top pick of the entire year.
March: Aquamarine, an underrated beauty, was the highlight of this Style File. These Fred Leighton earrings are set with icy blue aquamarine and diamonds ($20,400).
Gem Awards: In honor of the 2023 Gem Award for Jewelry Design nominees, Gizzi highlighted jewels from Anita Ko, Kirsty Stone of Retrouvaí, and Ron Anderson and David Rees of Tenthousandthings. This one-of-a-kind “XO” necklace in 14-karat yellow gold by Retrouvaí is set with emerald, sapphires, and onyx inlay (price available upon request).
April: Diamonds were the stars of the show in April, and rightfully so. Given the choice of a tiara over another jewel, I will almost always pick the tiara, like this diamond “Peacock Tiara” by Harakh ($189,800).
May: May is one of my favorite Style Files because I love emeralds. It was especially hard to pick a favorite for this one, but I chose this 18-karat yellow gold and emerald “Coiling Snake Ring” by Christina Alexiou ($10,470).
June: June has a bevy of beautiful birthstones to choose from, including pearls, moonstones, and alexandrites. I’m a pearl girl through and through, so these earrings are pretty special for me to have not picked a pearl option. I chose these 18-karat white gold Coomi (price available upon request).
Dapper Dads: To celebrate the dads ahead of Father’s Day, Gizzi dedicated a Style File to men’s jewelry. I liked this Geoffrey Good “Hex Bar” medium eternity band in platinum with diamonds ($14,750).
Trendy Bows: This Style File highlighted the trending bow motif. My favorite iteration of this trend was this 14-karat rose gold “Ruby Royale” ruby and diamond ring by Effy ($4,750).
July: Speaking of rubies, here comes the July Style File. There were several gorgeous ruby jewels to choose from, but I was partial to this 14-karat yellow gold “Serenity Amulet” by Lionheart with rubies and diamonds ($2,645). It reminds me of a beautiful stained glass window.
Medallions: In a special edition Style File, Gizzi showcased trendy medallions. This 20-karat yellow gold “Mandala” pendant by Buddha Mama set with blue topaz and diamonds ($16,600) is a stunning take on the trend.
August: Peridot and spinel, two underappreciated gems, take center stage in the August Style File. My pick for the month is this 18-karat gold “Love” pendant by Heavenly Vices set with peridot and diamonds ($3,750).
September: September means sapphires in all their colorful glory, but you can’t go wrong with a classic blue sapphire. I loved this Kavant & Sharart “Agamo” bangle in 18-karat yellow gold with blue sapphires and diamonds ($12,390).
October: Opal and tourmaline followed in October. This 14-karat yellow gold “Bubble” bracelet set with a mint green tourmaline ($3,850) by Ashley Zhang Jewelry is an unassuming beauty.
Floral: With the fall chill setting in, this Style File reminded us that florals are in season year-round. I daydream about this 14-karat yellow gold lapis lazuli and diamond floral bar necklace ($2,995) by color extraordinaire Jane Taylor.
Halloween: Ghosts and spiders and cats, oh my! Halloween is my favorite holiday and my favorite Style File of the year. I couldn’t get enough of this adorable 14-karat gold and diamond ghost necklace ($1,015) by Sydney Evan .
November: I’m a November baby (Scorpios, unite!) and I love the citrine, so it’s a perfect fit. My top pick is this 14-karat yellow gold and citrine ring by Shy Creation , set with a yellow sapphire, citrines, and diamonds ($1,390).
December: After a year of gorgeous jewels, we round out 2023 with the December Style File, highlighting tanzanite, turquoise, and zircon. I’m asking Santa for this slim “Endless Loop” ring by Lindsey Scoggins Studio in 18-karat yellow gold with tanzanite and diamonds ($10,000).
