Visit A Mine in New Jersey With WJA New York Metro
The chapter has organized a day trip to the Sterling Hill Mine and Museum in Ogdensburg on Saturday, May 21.

For this year’s “In the Know” event, the chapter has organized a day trip to the Sterling Hill Mine and Museum in Ogdensburg, New Jersey, on Saturday, May 21.
Sterling Hill is located in the Franklin-Sterling Hill Mining District, known for its rich zinc ore and fluorescent mineral deposits.
The Sterling mine was a former New Jersey Zinc Company mine, which was the state’s last underground mine until it ceased operations in 1986.
The museum that sits on its grounds explores the area’s mining history and earth science research.
Saturday’s event includes a walking tour of the mine—including “The Rainbow Tunnel,” an area where fluorescent zinc ore is exposed—an outdoor display of mining machinery, and a visit to the exhibit halls, including a 16-foot-wide display of 100 fluorescent mineral specimens.
Attendees will also be able to collect their own mineral specimens from the mine run dump, with both an international pile (minerals from around the world) and a local pile (ore derived from the Sterling Hill Mine).
Tickets include bus transportation to and from Manhattan and lunch at the Atlantic Manor Restaurant. (Those coming from New Jersey are welcome to drive there.)
It is an adults-only event.
Tickets are priced at $85 for members and $95 for non-members.
